Habagat to Bring More Rain to Parts of Luzon Through August 17, PAGASA Says
Rain and thunderstorms expected over several areas. Zambales and Bataan face higher rainfall risk.
MANILA, Philippines — The Southwest Monsoon, locally known as Habagat, is expected to continue bringing rain to several parts of Luzon over the coming days, with some areas facing periods of potentially heavy rainfall, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
PAGASA's latest weather outlook indicates that Habagat will continue affecting portions of Luzon, including Metro Manila and several provinces in northern, central and southern Luzon.
Rain and thunderstorms expected over several areas
For Saturday, August 15, cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila, the Ilocos Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon.
Parts of CALABARZON, including Cavite, Laguna, Batangas and Rizal, as well as Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro, may also experience rain and thunderstorms associated with the southwest monsoon.
PAGASA's weekly outlook indicates that Habagat may continue to produce occasional to frequent rains over several western and northern Luzon areas from Sunday through Wednesday.
Zambales and Bataan face higher rainfall risk
The heaviest rainfall concern in the near-term forecast is focused on Zambales and Bataan.
Based on PAGASA's heavy rainfall outlook reported on August 14, these two provinces could receive approximately 50 to 100 millimeters of rain from the evening of August 15 through the evening of August 16.
Another period of 50 to 100 millimeters of rainfall is forecast for Zambales and Bataan from the evening of August 16 through the evening of August 17.
By Sunday evening through Monday evening, August 17, the areas included in the 50–100 mm rainfall outlook expand to Ilocos Sur, La Union, Benguet, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan and Occidental Mindoro.
The forecast does not mean that every location within these provinces will receive the same amount of rainfall. Actual rainfall totals can vary depending on local weather conditions.
Habagat may persist into the coming week
PAGASA's extended outlook indicates that Habagat may continue affecting parts of Luzon beyond the weekend.
From August 16 to 19, occasional to frequent rains may continue over La Union, Pangasinan, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas and Occidental Mindoro.
Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon may experience cloudy conditions with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms during the same period.
Residents advised to monitor weather updates
Periods of heavy rain can increase the risk of localized flooding and landslides, particularly in low-lying communities, areas near waterways and locations with saturated soil.
Residents in affected areas are advised to monitor official weather bulletins and rainfall warnings from PAGASA and follow instructions from local disaster risk reduction and management authorities.
Motorists should also exercise caution when traveling during periods of heavy rainfall because reduced visibility, slippery roads and localized flooding may affect road conditions.
People living near rivers, waterways and landslide-prone areas should remain alert for changes in weather conditions, especially when persistent rainfall occurs.

While Habagat is expected to remain the dominant weather system affecting portions of Luzon, rainfall will not be uniform across the region.
Some areas may experience periods of rain followed by temporary breaks, while thunderstorms may develop in other locations.
